Power Steering Repair Cost

Power steering repair costs vary widely — from $100 for a fluid flush to $1,500 for rack and pinion replacement. The type of power steering system (hydraulic vs. electric) determines what can fail and what it costs to fix.

Cost by Repair Type

Hydraulic vs. Electric Power Steering

Older vehicles (pre-2010 mostly) use hydraulic power steering — a belt-driven pump pressurizes fluid to assist steering. Modern vehicles increasingly use electric power steering (EPS) which uses a motor and requires no fluid. EPS is more fuel-efficient but when it fails the repair is often electronic rather than mechanical.

Symptoms of Power Steering Problems

Check the Fluid First

On hydraulic systems, check the power steering fluid level first — it's a reservoir under the hood, often labeled. Low fluid is sometimes a $10 fix (top-up + check for leaks). Dark brown or black fluid means it's overdue for a flush. If the pump whines even with proper fluid, the pump itself is likely failing.

Rack and Pinion vs. Pump Diagnosis

A bad pump causes noise and effort issues at all steering positions. A bad rack causes specific problems at certain wheel angles — noise or resistance when turning to full lock, fluid leaks from the rack boots, or looseness in the steering. A shop can diagnose which component has failed with a pressure test and visual inspection.
