P0562 — System Voltage Low
P0562 means the PCM has detected system voltage below the minimum threshold (typically around 10V) while the engine is running. This almost always points to a failing alternator or battery issue.
What Does P0562 Mean?
A healthy charging system should maintain 13.5–14.5 volts while the engine is running. P0562 is set when voltage drops below approximately 10V — indicating the alternator isn't producing enough power to keep the battery charged. The battery will drain while driving, eventually causing a stall.
Symptoms
- Battery warning light on dashboard
- Dimming headlights and interior lights
- Electrical accessories behaving erratically or dropping out
- Battery repeatedly going dead
- Engine stalling (battery fully discharged)
Can I Drive with P0562?
Briefly — but the battery will drain while driving and the car will eventually stall. Do not make long trips. Drive directly to a shop or auto parts store for testing.
Diagnosis Steps
- Have battery and alternator tested free at AutoZone, O'Reilly, or similar
- Check alternator belt — a slipping or broken belt prevents charging
- Check battery terminals for corrosion — poor connection can cause low voltage
- If alternator output is below 13V at idle, alternator replacement is needed
Repair Cost
- Battery terminal cleaning: $0–$50 (often free at shops)
- Alternator belt replacement: $150–$300
- Battery replacement: $150–$350
- Alternator replacement: $500–$1,200 depending on vehicle
