P0335 — Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0335 is a serious code — the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) is critical for engine timing and fuel injection. Without a valid signal, the engine may stall unpredictably or not start at all.
What Does P0335 Mean?
The crankshaft position sensor monitors the position and rotational speed of the crankshaft. The ECU uses this data to time ignition sparks and fuel injection pulses. Without it, the engine can't run correctly. P0335 means the ECU is receiving an invalid or absent signal from the CKP sensor circuit.
Symptoms
- Engine stalls at random, especially when hot
- Hard start or no-start condition
- Engine hesitation during acceleration
- Rough idle or misfires
- Check engine light (may also trigger P0300 random misfire)
Can I Drive with P0335?
No — or at least not far. The engine can stall without warning, including at highway speeds. This is a safety risk. Have the vehicle towed or drive it only to the nearest shop.
Repair Cost
- Crankshaft position sensor replacement: $150–$350 parts + labor
- Labor: 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on sensor location
- Wiring harness repair (if wiring is the cause): $100–$400
- Tone ring replacement (if damaged): $200–$600 — requires transmission or oil pan removal on some engines
Diagnosis Tips
The CKP sensor is sometimes intermittent — it fails when hot and works again after cooling. This makes it tricky to catch. If the car stalls and won't start, then starts fine after cooling down, a failing CKP sensor is strongly suspected. A scan tool can check for CKP signal while cranking to confirm.
