P0087 — Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low
P0087 means fuel pressure in the fuel rail is below the minimum required for proper engine operation. The engine may hesitate, stumble under load, or stall. This is a safety-relevant code if the vehicle stalls in traffic.
What Does P0087 Mean?
The ECU monitors fuel rail pressure via a sensor. When pressure drops below the specified minimum, P0087 is set. This means the fuel system isn't delivering enough fuel volume or pressure to the injectors. Under hard acceleration or load, this causes stumbling, hesitation, or power loss.
Symptoms
- Hesitation or stumbling during acceleration
- Loss of power, especially at highway speeds or under load
- Hard starting when hot
- Engine stalls under acceleration
- Long crank time before starting
Common Causes (Ranked by Likelihood)
- Failing fuel pump (most common) — weak pump can't maintain pressure under load
- Clogged fuel filter — restricts flow (if vehicle has an inline filter)
- Failed fuel pressure regulator — allows pressure to bleed off
- Clogged fuel injectors — restricts return flow
- Leaking fuel injector — bleeds pressure when engine is off
- Weak fuel pump relay or wiring
Can I Drive with P0087?
Temporarily, but with caution. The vehicle may stall during acceleration, which is dangerous at highway speeds or in traffic. Avoid highway driving until diagnosed. If stalling occurs, pull over safely.
Repair Cost
- Fuel filter replacement (if applicable): $100–$200
- Fuel pressure regulator: $200–$400
- Fuel pump replacement: $1,000–$2,000 (in-tank pump)
- Fuel injector cleaning: $100–$200
- Diagnosis (fuel pressure test): $75–$150
