Oxygen Sensor Replacement Cost

Oxygen sensor replacement costs $200–$500 per sensor including parts and labor. Most modern vehicles have 2–4 O2 sensors, and they're one of the most common causes of check engine lights — including the P0420 catalytic converter code.

What Do Oxygen Sensors Do?

Upstream O2 sensors (before the catalytic converter) measure exhaust oxygen content and help the ECU set the air-fuel ratio in real time. Downstream sensors (after the converter) monitor the catalytic converter's efficiency. A failing upstream sensor directly affects fuel economy and emissions. A failing downstream sensor often triggers P0420 (catalyst efficiency) codes.

Common O2 Sensor Codes

Should I Replace All Sensors at Once?

O2 sensors age together. If one fails on a high-mileage vehicle, the others are likely not far behind. Replacing all sensors at once saves labor since the shop is already working in the area. However, if the vehicle has under 80,000 miles, replacing only the failed sensor is reasonable.

Don't Confuse O2 Sensor with Catalytic Converter

P0420 is commonly blamed on the catalytic converter, but a failing downstream O2 sensor causes the same code and costs $200–$350 vs. $800–$2,500 for a converter. Always test the O2 sensor first before condemning the converter. A waveform test on an oscilloscope definitively determines if the sensor or converter is the problem.
