Fuel pump replacement costs $400–$900 including parts and labor. Most modern fuel pumps are electric and located inside the gas tank, making replacement more labor-intensive than older vehicles.

Symptoms of a Failing Fuel Pump

What Triggers P0087?

P0087 means fuel rail pressure is below the minimum required level. This is most commonly a failing fuel pump, but can also be caused by a clogged fuel filter (if your vehicle has an inline filter), a failed fuel pressure regulator, or a clogged fuel injector. A fuel pressure test is needed to properly diagnose.

Extend Pump Life

The fuel pump is cooled and lubricated by the fuel itself. Frequently running the tank below 1/4 tank stresses the pump by reducing cooling and increasing the risk of sucking sediment from the tank bottom. Keeping the tank above 1/4 tank is the single best way to extend fuel pump life.
